Brother Harold L. Daggett

WELLS -- Harold L. Daggett, 84, of Garden Street, passed away June 18, 2007, in the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough.
     He was born
July 3, 1922, in Houlton, the son of Clyde and Tressa (Smith) Daggett. At age five, he relocated to Wells, where his family ran Daggett's Poultry Place; a chicken farm and fresh vegetable store. The family also ran a grocery store and raised hatching eggs.
     After graduating from
Wells High School, he attended McIntosh Business College in Dover, N.H. He then served in the United States Air force during World War II in England, Italy and North Africa. For 25 years, he was a toll collector for the Maine Turnpike Authority. Many years ago, he was a member of the Appeals Board.
     After finding a diary of his mother's life, he decided to write his own. As a result, he wrote 24 stories of his own true-life experiences. He was an avid golfer and member of the Cape Neddick Country Club. He was also a member of Ocean Lodge #142 AF & AM of Wells.
     He was predeceased by his parents and his oldest sister, Madelyn Roberts. Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Louise Daggett; a son, Wayne Daggett; a daughter, Kathleen Quimby and her husband James of Scarborough; a sister, Arlene Low of Pasadena, Calif.; a brother, Glen Daggett and wife Barbara of
Kennebunk; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; three nieces; three nephews and several great- nieces and nephews.
     Relatives and friends are invited to a graveside service on Friday, June 22 at
11 a.m., in the Ocean View Cemetery in Wells. Arrangements are by the Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick.
     The family wishes to thank all the staff at the Scarborough Maine Veterans Home for their kind and dedicated care over the past 19 months.

Worshipful Brother, Mort O'Connell

YORK -- Mortimer J. O'Connell, 91, of 74 A Cider Hill Rd., died Tuesday, April 17, 2007, in York Hospital. He was born, Jan. 24, 1916, in Lewiston, son of William and Mary (Craig) O'Connell. He graduated from Lewiston High School, class of 1935, and then joined the Maine National Guard. He was an Army Veteran of World War II and was stationed in Italy. He was a Maine State Trooper and retired as a Sergeant after 22 years of service. He was also a letter carrier with the York Post Office for eight years.
     He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 143. He was a member of the Ocean Lodge of Masons and Past Master. He was a 32 degree Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies of Portland, and the Maine Chapter Royal Arch in
Kennebunk.
     His wife Bessie (Whitworth) O'Connell died in 2005. He leaves a son, James M. O'Connell and his wife Marjorie L. O'Connell of Ogunquit; a stepdaughter, Marie Dry of
Cocoa Beach, Fla.; a brother, David O'Connell of Harpswell; five grandchildren, Michael, John, Robert, David and Linda; five great-granddaughters, Jessica, Jennifer, Jillian, Lindsey and Lauren. Five brothers, William, Louis, Daniel, Edward and Paul, predeceased him.
     Funeral services and burial will be private and at the convenience of the family in
Grace Lawn Memorial Park, Auburn.

Worshipful Brother, Bill Haas, AGC

KENNEBUNK -- William Bill Haas, 83, died April 18, 2007, at his home after a brief illness. He was born in New Bedford, Mass., on Dec. 18, 1923, the son of John and Lena (Littlesen) Haas.
     He graduated from
Balboa High School in Balboa, Canal Zone, Panama, then in 1941, began his service in the United States Navy. He was commissioned and served on the USS California in the Pacific as a Gunnery Officer. After the war, he entered the Submarine Service as an Active Reservist. He was active in the Power Squadron and Coast Guard Auxiliary, teaching courses in seamanship, coastal navigation, and sailing. He also served as Commander of Flotilla #415 USCG Auxiliary in 1972, receiving commendations for his exemplary work.
     Bill earned B.S. and M.S. degrees from
Tufts University. During his teaching career, he taught junior and senior high in both public and private schools, as well as college courses at local universities. Later, he became an Education Representative for a number of publishing companies, working in New England and at the Department of Defense schools in Europe. He was elected president of the Theta Chapter of the National Bookmen's Association and served as president of the Educational Sales Association of New England.
     While living in
Melrose, Mass., he organized and coached for six years the first Pee Wee football team in the city, leading it to a regional championship.
     Upon retirement, Bill took an active interest in community service, which including delivering Meals on Wheels and volunteering at the local Food Pantry. He was a member of the Congregational Church of Wells where he served as Deacon, liturgist, and on various committees.
     Of all his accomplishments, however, his dedication to and love of the Masonic organizations was his most fulfilling. He served as Master of Ocean Lodge in Wells, and Chaplain, and then appointed as Grand Chaplain for the Grand Lodge of Maine. He served as secretary of the Pioneer Club. He was a Knights Templar and in 2006 became a 33rd Degree Mason. Bill was a member of the Kora Shrine and the York County Shrine Club Degree Team, as well as the Facts & Figures Unit.
     His wife, Charlotte, predeceased him. He is survived by his son, Bruce of Hingham, Mass., and daughter, Susan Handy of Auburn, N.H.; four grandchildren, Jillian, Allison, Kristin and Harry; and a sister, Mildred Frick of Smyrna, Ga.
     Visiting hours will be held Thursday, April 26, from 5 to 8 p.m. with a Masonic Service at 7:30 p.m. at the
Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market St., North Berwick. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at the Congregational Church, Route 1, Wells. Private interment will follow in Ocean View Cemetery.

 Brother Roger Batchelder

WELLS -- Roger M. Batchelder 80, a resident of Atlantic Avenue died peacefully Thursday evening at the York Hospital in York, with his wife at his side.
     Roger was born on the family farm on
Dec. 24, 1926, the son of Willis and Ada (Hutchins) Batchelder and attended Wells Schools. In his younger years, he worked at the family farm and then he owned and operated the Beach Acres Campground in Wells from 1964 until his retirement in 1991.
     He was a longtime chairman for the Wells Sewer District for many years. He was a member of the Ocean Lodge #142 of Wells, Scottish Rite Valley of Portland, the Kora Shriners of Lewiston and the York Country Shrine Club, M.O.A.L.S. Auto Club of
Maine. He was avid fisherman.
     Roger was predeceased by his first wife, Arline E. Batchelder who died in 1998; a brother Donald and a sister Hyacinth. He is survived by his wife of five years, Rosemarie (Ouellette) Batchelder of Wells; a son, Marc A. Batchelder of Wells; a daughter, Priscilla E. Floodman of Texas; three step-children, Katherine Nelson of
Kennebunk, Sean and William Dumont both of Sanford; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
     Visiting hours will be held from
5 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 9, 2007, at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Rd., Wells, with a Masonic Services at 7 p.m. at the Chapel. Graveside Service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, at the Ocean View Cemetery, Post Road, Wells.
