Robert (Bob) Lawrence Brown, 80 BRUNSWICK -- Robert (Bob) Lawrence Brown, 80, died Friday at his home in Thornton Hall, Brunswick, after a successful effort to celebrate his life despite heart and lung disease. He spent the last few years with family around the country and thoroughly enjoyed his past two winters in Florida. He recently celebrated his eightieth birthday at Thornton Hall where his six grandchildren showcased their musical talents for him, family, and his neighbors.

He was born in BrooksMaine, the son of Lawrence and Eunice (Cilley) Brown. Bob served in the US Army Air Force from 1946 to 1949, and returned home to Maine to complete engineering studies inOrono; he received a BS in agricultural engineering from the University of Maine in 1953. He completed graduate course work in machine operations and geotechnical engineering, and was an ardent supporter of continuing education, learning to use the computer for design work CAD later in life.

The work he was most proud of included being part of design teams that engineered automated systems for the poultry industry and free standing barn systems for the dairy industry. He assisted in the development of Beaver Cove at Moosehead Lake while employed at the J M Huber Corp, and later, as town engineer in Wells, designed and supervised construction of the Town Hall.

Bob was an avid hunter and fisherman; he enjoyed tromping through the woods on his family home in BrooksMaine with parents, siblings, his best friend Martin Wildes, and nephews. He got a kick out of telling stories, particularly ones about his moose hunting escapade in Northern Maine with Dick Darling. The Brown family plays cribbage, and he always tried to win, but was mostly a good sport when he lost. Reading and following current events, especially politics, kept him engrossed. Most of all, he loved and was proudest of his family.

He was a Mason, active in both Arundel Lodge No. 76 and United Lodge No.8, and particularly enjoyed participating in Masonic functions with Nils, his son-in-law. He was predeceased by his first wife, Lucille Packard, and by his second wife of 48 years, Gloria Wakefield.

Surviving Bob are daughters and son-in-laws, Linda Nevers and her husband Joel of Kennebunk, Melanie Groneng and her husband Nils of Brunswick, Beth Darling and her husband Bill of Amherst, N.H.; Grandchildren, Kaia and Christopher Groneng of Brunswick, Caleb, Samuel, Isabella, and Ezra Darling of Amherst, N.H.; Brother,Wilbur Allan Brown of Benton, five sisters, Betty Littlefield of Brooks, Virginia Robertson of Carmel, Calif., Joan Stephenson of Nova Scotia, Canada, Marlene Wight of Old Town, Marsha Shibles of Knox; many nieces, nephews, and many greats.
